Omega-3 fatty acids are “good” fats which we humans are incapable of producing on our own. They are, however, found in every kind of fish and are especially abundant in fatty fish. Because of this, and their rich protein, vitamins and nutrient content, fish have a number of health benefits. Salmon, sardine, tuna, mackerel, cod, trout, herring and oysters are among the most nutritious among fish.
Here are five health facts about fish:
- Fish is among the best possible foods for your heart
The American Heart Association recommends consuming fish at least twice a week as it can lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of sudden death, heart attack, abnormal heart rhythms and stroke.
- Fish is essential for healthy brain development and function
The omega-3 fatty acids in fish, EPA and DHA, are critical for normal brain development in children and healthy brain function throughout all stages of life. Fish oil supplements may even improve brain function in persons with depression, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or age-related cognitive decline.

- Children who eat more fish are less likely to develop asthma
Asthma is a disease characterized by chronic inflammation in the airways. The omega-3 fatty acids in fish and fish oil reduce inflammation and other symptoms of asthma.
- Fish improves eyesight
An article (based on multiple studies) published by the Harvard School of Public Health revealed that pre-term babies who are fed formula containing DHA showed “significantly better visual acuity” between 2 and 4 months of age, in comparison to infants who were fed formula that did not contain the omega-3 supplement.
- Fish is the best dietary source of Vitamin D
Fatty fish like salmon and herring are abundant in Vitamin D. A single teaspoon of fish oil can also provide over 200% of the recommended daily requirement of Vitamin D.
