GREEN PEAS FOR GOOD HEALTH

One of the most commonly used food ingredients, green peas are also an incredibly healthy diet choice due to its high nutritive content and their association with the prevention of chronic illnesses.

Although peas contain some anti-nutrients which may prevent the absorption of nutrients and/or cause digestive trouble, these effects can be avoided through a few simple measures.

Here are a few reasons why you need to start including more peas in your diet:

Nutritional Value

100 grams of peas contains 81 calories, 5.4 grams of proteins, 0.4 grams of total fat, and 5.7 grams of dietary fibre.

Peas are also rich in Vitamin A, C, K, and all the important B vitamins such as Vitamin B1, B2, B3, B6. They also contain minerals including calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium and very small amount of sodium.

Heart Health

According to the American Heart Association, green peas and other legumes facilitate the maintenance of a healthy heart.

Being a rich source of important B Vitamins and folic acid, green peas have properties that protect the heart. These vitamins check the homocysteine levels which are known to damage your heart and blood vessels, thus protecting the heart from cardiovascular diseases.

Cholesterol Cleansing

A study conducted in Canada has revealed that one serving (3/4 cup) of legumes per day resulted in a reduction of low-density lipoprotein LDL (bad cholesterol)  by 5%.

This, in turn, also means that the risk of heart disease is lowered by 5%.

Diabetic Friendly

Peas have a low glycemic index and a low glycemic load.

The fibre and protein content of peas is thought to help slow digestion, which, in turn, can help smooth out blood sugar levels after eating.

Cancer Prevention

Beans, peas, and lentils have phytochemicals, saponins, and tannins in them.

Their antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties are said to lower the risks of cancer.

Important: If you have gout, green peas are not recommended for you.
